Many leadership theorists and scholars like to use the hidden iceberg as a metaphor for leadership. In fact, Dr. Tim Elmore uses this metaphor well in his book The Art of Self Leadership. I think we can craft that metaphor for business leadership as well.
Elmore says “The iceberg represents your leadership. The 10% above the water is your skill. The 90% below the water is your character. It’s what’s below the surface that sinks the ship.”
The results your clients and team see (the 90%) is the product of what no one sees (the 10%). So what is this 10%?
I believe it’s a leader’s motivations…. their inner belief system… their unconscious value system. And until we unpack that 10%, and truly take full ownership of it, we’ll never lead our teams to get the results we know are possible.
I recently stumbled upon a great video that delves a little further into this leadership concept. Don’t worry – it’s only 3 minutes long – and it’s worth it. It’ll get you thinking.
Take a look. And when you’re done watching – let me know what YOU think over on twitter – @bryanmiles.
